the worst. jennifer donelan is live in northeast washington with an important detail to try to prevent flooding. >> yesterday we saw a lot of apathy. today, a lot more concerned. this time of year, this is the major problem. we have leaves all over the place and we have storm drains and these leaves in the storm drains mean we will have clogged drains. in college park, pepco crews were ahead of what may or may not be a power blowout from hurricane sandy. >> i am very concerned about it. >> pepco's presents down the street was welcome. >> i am concerned for the children. >> pepco said it had already begun preparations ahead of sandy's arrival. 400 outside contractors are already in the region trying to improve reliability. pepco said they are adding to

their personal in case they're needed. and the extra workers will be on duty this weekend. frustrating flooding such a massive problem this summer, d.c. water sent a number of crews today to check the source system. they also hit trouble spots in every climate of the city. >> make sure that i am prepared in the basement and are tenants are prepared and ready to put their furniture out on bricks. >> eric was among the first wave of customers buying generators at the home depot in the district. others were buying batteries. >> i am paying attention now. >> the beautiful fall colors it could spell trouble in the coming days, especially when they are right into the streets. montgomery county authorities are urging residents to sign up for their other system ahead of

and the washington, d.c. area, and even coached a gold medalist in the olympics. following weeks of speculation of alleged sexual abuse 63- year-old richard curl left his home in vienna and went morning. >> everybody trusted him and that trust was broken. >> kelly spoke with abc 7 news in july, accusing curl of sexually abusing her when she was 13, on the swim team in the 1980's. she claimed the inappropriate relationship included sex several times. sometimes at georgetown prep school where the swim practice was held. curl's attorney released this statement today --

currin says she finally spoke out because curl tried to pay off her family to keep quiet and she is now worried more victims are out there. >> i feel guilty constantly because i have not done anything to protect others. >> at this point, usa swimming has not released a statement in regards to what the victim's attorney just said. as far as mr. curl, he has a hearing scheduled in montgomery county in november. that natasha barrett, abc 7 news. >> at least one lane of route 1 is open in howard county after a horrible crash that left three people dead. it happened at 6:00 this morning on route 1. investigators say that a

chevrolet traveling north at a high rate of speed struck a southbound tractor-trailer. the truck driver was trying to turn left across the highway. the truck driver was not hurt. the accident shut down route 1 near elkridge nearly five hours. >> in maryland mother and son have been acquitted of charges that contributed to the deaths of three teenagers including their own family member. the case hinged on who bought alcohol. horace holmes has what happened in court today. >> there was no jury in this trial and the defense did not call one witness though after the prosecution rested its case, the judge issued a very quick verdict. debby franco left the courthouse, her son joshua at her side, acquitted after they were acquitted of providing alcohol at a party that led to this horrible accident that killed her daughter and three others. >> this was a complete tragedy

but it was also a tragedy they were charged as part of this unfortunate incident. >> the accident happened on january 27. a car driven by britney walker with three other passengers inside travelled the wrong way on interstate 97 and route 50 in anne arundel county until it plowed into a car driven by 55- year-old terry davis. occupants of both cars died. in court the prosecution called a stream of witnesses, most of them teenagers. they said there was a drinking party at the franco home, which was for breanna who had returned home from germany. witnesses say there were beer at the party and they're charging $5 to drink. the mother and her adult son or at home at night. >> think about what they have gone through. they have lost their daughter, breanna, in this crash.

today brought back terrible memories. >> there was also no evidence in court today the driver of the car, britney walker, was ever at the franc live from glen burnie, horace holmes, abc 7 news. >> two groups of protesters with opposing views on gay marriage rally outside of gallaudet university in support of its diversity chief, angela mccaskill, who was placed on administrative leave after signing a petition putting same- sex marriage on november's november ballot. >> mccaskill's attorney and the university say negotiations are ongoing. they said the conversations are moving in the right direction and they say it is extremely likely she will get her job back but first they need to resolve issues like mccaskill's safety and the hateful messages she has been getting. outside gallaudet university's southgate, a few dozen organized

protesters called for the immediate reinstatement of the chief of diversity, angela mccaskill. >> we cannot trade one form discrimination for another form of discrimination. in a free society, people have the right to their personal beliefs. even if it makes us uncomfortable. >> down the street more protestors who oppose same-sex marriage held their own rally. >> it is up to the voters to make that decision. >> many students and staff members stood nearby and observed. mccaskill did not turn to, but mccaskill did not attend, but her attorney said the university must provide her safety and possibly provide financial compensation for the irreparable harm she says she has received. >> this has harmed her reputation and how that will be restored. >> mccaskill shared some of the email she has been receiving

attacking her, some of them racially charged. a gallaudet spokesperson said that her employment status remains unchanged. in a letter to the community the president said the university administration has had productive meetings with it lgbt students and students of color and staff. >> 12 days until the election and the race for the white house appears to be in a dead heat. president obama was in richmond, va., this afternoon. today the president received endorsements from former secretary of state: pal. and the washington post. -- colin poweel and the washington post. paul ryan was also in virginia today, speaking at a rally in bristow.

everyone is watching hurricane sandy. people along the maryland and delaware beaches could be in the target area. >> brad bell is live in bethany beach with how people are preparing. >> a beautiful day at bethany, but a number of walking the boardwalk. just about every one of them has asked the same thing, expressing concern, what will this storm due to the town and the beach? we found carol enjoying the sand of bethany beach. she is spending her first off- season living here. for her, talk of a perfect storm is upsetting. >> i love that the way it is. i hate to see it disappear. >> she remembers the scenes from a hurricane turned nor'easter in november to 009. -- 2009. it virtually wiped out the beach

and there was widespread flooding from the bay side as the high wind pushed the high tide at inland. it took more than two years to rebuild the beach and sand dunes. tonight, there was fear it would happen again. this person is running a boardwalk toy store for the weekend. that concerns me because i have not been down the beach for any of the storms. we have always been in land more and i will be concern for the stores. >> this person owns for apparel shops. >> concerned that it may do some damage. >> for now, she is hopeful that sandy will take some peach and sand dunes but leave the buildings alone, like the storm she says haoles have. >> -- but the storms always have. >> not once have we had any water damage, so hopefully this will be the same. >> behind me, some call beach grass and very short speech

already. homestead air force base, fla., 75 degrees. wind gusts of 52 heavy rain. this pattern will move. the storm is moving quickly but will slow down once it makes landfall and will be a protractor long, slow moving system. but not the next few days. meantime not bad. 60's, low 70's, some sunshine. the wind will be out of the east and southeast, bringing the low- level moisture. overnight, clouds, patchy fog, drizzle commonplace. right now, all of the sunshine very warm temperatures. 83 charleston, 80 degrees and asheville, 76 indianapolis. on the other side of this cold front, blue or minnesota and the low 30's. this will be a key player, this trough of low pressure, the leading edge, a very strong upper level low associated with

it, and that will make this happen in the next several days involving sandy. for the moment, not a lot of stormiest. with the leading edge of the cold front is still back to the west. the next few days, more cloudiness slowing coolly -- slowly cooling temperatures, and then the effects of sandy. over the bahamas, the rain shield expanding, the cloud sheield goes well over a thousand miles. this is pretty much following the warm water of the gulf stream and it will be slow to deteriorate. this is the national hurricane center storm track through southern new jersey. it could be south or north of there. that is kind of the center line. the storm will be so big that the exact center line will not have an eye. these are the spaghetti plots some of them.

they all turned in time. some bring it into the atlantic city some further north. we have one at out liar, the european model that brings it over delmarva. the computer model guidance suggests sunday night through tuesday will be the time frame, somewhere in the mid-atlantic southern went to coast. even in our area, heavy rain, strong wind, possible power outages, localized flooding. all of these are possibilities as we move through monday and tuesday of next week. the seven-day, the temperatures drop. monday and tuesday, it will be windy and cold. the closer the storm center gets to us, the worst the effects. the farther to the east and north that it goes the less the effects. i don't see any way that we don't get something out of this. it will be rain and gusty wind, no matter what. that is just a question of how severe it will be. >> stay in touch.

officer adrian morris died in august after he lost control of his cruiser chasing a pair of suspects. the two men are also facing felony theft charges. and at a news conference, we learn a former fbi agent charged with a deadly car crash has been found guilty on all counts. prosecutors say adrian johnson was intoxicated and speeding when his car crashed into another vehicle near brandywine last year. an 18-year-old died and his best friend seriously injured. maximum of 13 years in prison. >> time to look at the other top stories, a former olympic swim coach has been banned from the sport for life and has surrendered to montgomery county police. rick curl is charged with one count of child abuse, based on allegations he had an ongoing sexual relationship with a young swimmer in the 1980's. >> a mother and son have been found not guilty of giving alcohol to minors were killed in

found he was a guest speaker at a festival for families. and he gave a presentation to children at the festival. >> that is right scott says he was invited to be part of a presentation. we went straight to his parole officer to find out why he was given permission to attend. after pressing for answers, just hours ago he was handcuffed and put under arrest. officials are now scrambling to explain how it all happened. this man in overalls and a straw hat is a three-time convicted sex offender. paroled in june, this felony child molester is to steps away from children at a fairfax county festival in september where he was a guest speaker. >> your part of a living history presentation? >> that is right. i was talking about the end.

>> it gives you a creepy feeling, makes you wonder whether everyone is to win their job. >> he was invited to the festival to give a speech about his time as an inmate at the former lord reformatory. it is now a fairfax county park where he spent part of an 18- year sentence for sodomizing a boy. he spoke with hundreds of guests including children. the fairfax county park authority advertised it as family friendly, but one facebook post within two weeks before it was the only public notification we found that the former inmates would be there. and the county admits it never looked into the nature or severity of the offender's crimes. >> i am shocked surprised disappointed and the county they did not do the background checks. >> when we started asking questions, officials called for an internal investigation.

>> the county attorney's office and other appropriate staff are checking into what happened and why. >> but it was not just fairfax county. recent parole supervisors in d.c. gave him permission to attend, even though his parole condition strictly prohibit any direct contact with minors. why would a federal agency allow him to violate his parole? we went to his parole officer to find out come up the refuse to answer any of our questions. >> we issued a statement and i have been advised not to say anything further. >> when he was paroled he had to sign a document acknowledging he cannot have a direct contact with miners even in public. but he says he did nothing wrong. >> there is not a problem for me. i was never alone with anybody. >> tonight, he is in a d.c. jail while he awaits a hearing for
